The Gilroy Unified School District board on Aug. 7 approved several formal actions reported out of closed session and enacted a package of contracts and staffing authorizations across special education, therapy services and professional development.
In closed-session actions the board approved expulsions for items numbered 2025‑37 and 2025‑38. For item 2025‑37 the board first voted to expel and later voted on a motion to suspend the expulsion; the suspension motion passed with one no vote from Trustee Michelle Nelson. For item 2025‑38 trustees voted to expel and also approved language striking the first cited ED code section while proceeding under the second and third ED code sections.
During the public consent process the board approved the consolidated application for categorical aid (item 5F). Trustees discussed prior federal withholdings and released funds; Trustee Michelle Nelson named specific line items and dollar figures for English learners and immigrant programs and praised the district's financial planning.
The board approved multiple contracts and renewals by roll call, including a professional‑learning contract with Sado Early Learning Foundation (not to exceed $120,000 over the 2025–26 and 2026–27 school years) to support dual‑language TK–2 teams; a contract with National Staffing Solutions for one occupational therapist (not to exceed $167,244 for 2025–26); renewal of a master contract with Pacific Clinics for a school‑based intervention team (not to exceed $215,550); and renewals for speech and language and visual‑impairment services (Social Communication Club, Sonia Biggs Educational Services). The board also approved amendments to contracts for nonpublic placements and nursing services to cover ESY and the coming school year.
Staff said many hiring and contract decisions were driven by a tight labor market for specialized positions and the district's goal of increasing in‑person services after COVID‑era remote arrangements. Trustees approved provisional internship permits for four existing employees so they may begin teaching while completing credentials.
Roll call votes were used throughout; the meeting closed after trustee reports and an announcement that the next regular meeting would be Aug. 21, 2025.
