United Way urges Hamilton County to restore 211 funding to about $200,000
Summary
United Way requested that Hamilton County return its funding for the 211 helpline to roughly $200,000, arguing the service handled more than 41,000 calls and prevents costlier crises by routing residents to food, housing, utility and health resources.

United Way asked Hamilton County to restore its contribution for the 211 helpline to roughly $200,000 to cover local demand and stabilize the regional service. Taran Anderson, vice president of community and corporate engagement at United Way, told the budget committee that 211 handled more than 41,000 calls and over 8,400 text contacts from Hamilton County residents last year and that most callers seek help with food, housing, utilities and benefits.
Anderson said the organization is requesting a return to the historical local contribution level, framing the ask as a “right sizing” rather than a new program. “This is really just a right sizing — restoring Hamilton County’s investments in 211 to around the $200,000 level,” Anderson said, adding that 211 prevents higher-cost county interventions by routing people to appropriate services earlier.
United Way’s representative explained that while Hamilton County’s proportional share of total operating costs would be closer to $498,000 based on usage, the organization is asking only for the $200,000 partial investment and pursuing state-level funding to partner with other regional 211 providers. Anderson emphasized that the local 211 footprint serves multiple counties but that Hamilton County residents are the primary users and that local funding supports staff and technologies used to handle spikes in demand during disasters and seasonal cost pressures.
The request drew no formal motion or vote at the hearing and commissioners did not take a final action; the presentation concluded with questions about technology and service metrics. The committee will consider the request in the broader budget process.
