Temple City’s community development staff reported June 3 that the Lost Tunis streetscape program has made progress but needs renewed outreach to achieve more storefront take-up. The council’s ad hoc (Council Members Chen and Yu) reviewed three small-business grant programs—blade signs, awnings and café furniture—and directed staff to "give it one last push" to recruit participants.
Staff said outreach included bilingual flyers, Chamber of Commerce visits, in-person business contacts and social-media videos. Of nine initial applications, eight qualified geographically; only one blade-sign applicant has reached fabrication so far. To encourage participation, staff will offer storefront mockups and direct property-owner contact, and council members volunteered to assist with outreach and translation as needed.
On related infrastructure, staff reported the contract for metal entry signs into the downtown has been executed and a pre-construction meeting is being scheduled. Paver leveling work is complete; new planters have been ordered with expected delivery in August and a contract to place planters, soil and plants will appear on an upcoming agenda. Trash cans and benches have been replaced and bench placement near bus stops will be adjusted to improve sightlines for riders. The art-on-boxes program will engage about 27 Temple City High School students, with painting expected within weeks.
Councilors asked about the adjacent development at the Clover Leaf site; staff said demolition and concrete removal are complete, sewer-line work is required before new construction proceeds, and a pre-construction meeting with property owners and contractors is scheduled.
