Glendora High adds Mariachi, Aviation 2 and semester ethnic studies to course catalog; coach announces resignation

The Glendora Unified board received and filed the 2025–26 Glendora High School course catalog at its Jan. 27 meeting and honored student athletes and scholars. Principal Jamie Nell presented additions, deletions and name changes to the catalog and led a recognition program that included a scholarship recipient and athletic milestones.
Highlights of the catalog presented by Principal Jamie Nell and assistant administrators included three new additions funded or enabled by state and district programs: Mariachi 1 (funded through Proposition 28 arts funding), Art for Self‑Expression and Aviation 2 — the capstone in the district’s aviation CTE pathway that prepares students to take the Private Pilot written exam. The catalog also includes a semester‑length ethnic studies course to comply with Assembly Bill 101 beginning in 2025–26. One course (Advanced Integrated One) was removed and several support‑class titles were renamed (e.g., Literacy Strategies for Success; explicit ELD level naming) to better reflect instructional intent.
Jamie Nell also introduced a number of student recognitions: Colton reached more than 1,144 career points in boys’ basketball, Brianna Gomez joined the girls’ Thousand Point Club, and Maxim received a QuestBridge National College Match scholarship and will attend College of the Holy Cross. In addition, staff recognized longtime coach Brandon Roar, who announced he is stepping down as head football coach after leading multiple CIF playoff appearances and a 99‑win coaching record; the program and community thanked him and noted he will continue teaching and supporting district curriculum work.
Board members asked clarifying questions (for example, why Robotics remains listed in the catalog despite no current instructor) and staff said some catalog entries are retained for a year or two in hopes programs and staffing can resume. The board accepted the catalog and 'received and filed' the presentation.
Next steps: staff will follow up on articulation agreements for CTE capstones (e.g., Aviation Capstone with Mt. San Antonio College) and answer any site‑level catalog questions as requested by board members.
