Janette Walszac, assistant superintendent for business services, and Anthony Prada, chief of maintenance and operations, outlined: (1) a field recovery/renovation that would kill weeds, laser‑grade and reseed — a shorter‑term, recurring fix; (2) installing sod, with one vendor estimate around $249,850 and another substantially higher; and (3) full synthetic turf with one written proposal at about $1.1 million and a verbal estimate up to $2.5 million to include a rubberized track and additional site work such as drainage and a retaining wall.
Board members emphasized the need for comparable scopes. Trustee Garcia requested apples‑to‑apples quotes that include the same set of elements (field, track, drainage, necessary retaining walls) and cautioned that preliminary contractor figures can understate final costs when architects, soils reports and other site work are added.
Trustees discussed funding sources (existing restricted fundraiser account balance was described as under $100,000) and potential partnerships, grants, or bond measures. Several trustees expressed a preference for doing the job comprehensively rather than piecemeal but acknowledged funding constraints.
Next steps: staff will solicit full, comparable proposals (including track scope), provide more detailed lifecycle and maintenance cost comparisons, and present updated estimates to the board.
