At its January meeting the Sunset Beach Environmental Review Committee discussed restructuring its volunteer subcommittees to give greater priority to coastal resilience and marine ecosystems, and deferred election of a permanent committee chair and vice chairs until the next meeting when more members can participate.
Members debated whether to name a chair who would sit outside subcommittees or remain active within committees. Several members urged keeping the chair engaged in subcommittee work. Steve and others argued for explicit resilience work across committees and recommended renaming the ocean/intracoastal grouping to “marine and climate” to better capture marsh, inlet and storm-water issues.
Why it matters: Committee restructuring would shape which volunteers review shoreline and drainage issues, how the ERC coordinates with town public works and state agencies, and which projects receive committee attention for 2026. Members said subcommittees should bring three-to-five measurable goals to the next meeting for possible council briefings.
Discussion highlights included naming conventions, membership limits and the desire to identify projects the subcommittees could realistically influence. The committee agreed to ask each subcommittee to draft goals for 2026 and return with proposals to the next ERC meeting for possible referral to the town council for direction.
A member reported on a rainfall briefing prepared by John Frell: 2025 rainfall through December was nearly 15 inches below the 30-year average and the town is experiencing moderate drought conditions. Committee members flagged monitoring and adaptation work (Jinx Creek, Tubs Inlet) as ongoing priorities.
Next steps: Subcommittees will meet to draft measurable 2026 goals and present them at the next ERC meeting; the formal election for chair and vice chairs was postponed to allow absent members to participate.
