Sunset Beach environmental committee tables statewide rules, forms working group to tailor draft

The Environmental Resources Committee of the Town of Sunset Beach voted to postpone adopting a draft “North Carolina rules and procedures for appointed boards” and formed a volunteer working group to revise the document for committee use. The motion passed by voice vote after members expressed concern that the draft uses the term "board" throughout and includes provisions — such as roll-call votes on every item — that committee members said do not reflect how they operate.

Committee members told the meeting the draft could be edited and returned in a format that fills the document’s blanks and replaces inapplicable references; however, several changes may require legal review. The committee agreed to continue following Robert’s Rules of Order for today’s meeting and to have a subgroup prepare suggested edits for staff and counsel to review.

The working group volunteers named during the meeting were Candace (committee member), Diddy (committee member), Mila (committee member) and John Frell (committee member/volunteer). Staff said the edited draft would be routed to legal once the working group and staff finalize recommended changes, and the committee will consider the revised document at a future meeting.

The committee’s action suspends immediate adoption but preserves the town’s open‑meetings requirements; the committee chair said members will continue operating under existing procedures until the tailored document is finalized and legally cleared.
