Hand Middle School named National "School to Watch"; students perform for board

The Richland School District One Board of School Commissioners on March 26 recognized Hand Middle School as a National Forum "School to Watch," a designation the forum awards to middle schools that meet 37 criteria for academic rigor and adolescent-focused supports.
"I am extremely proud of the work that we have done together," Principal Dr. Patrice T. Green said as she accepted the district's recognition on behalf of the school's faculty, staff and students. Board members praised Hand for sustained growth and community engagement; Dr. Witherspoon and other district leaders highlighted the school's multi-year effort to meet the forum's standards.
Students and members of Hand's core team received the school-to-watch banner and performed an a cappella piece in Italian and English for the board. Dr. Green told the board that more than 110 faculty and staff contributed to the application and campus supports that produced the designation.
The district plans a special assembly in April to present the official banner to students and staff. Board members said the recognition underscores district priorities for middle-level academic opportunities and access to higher-level coursework for young adolescents.
The board moved on to the next agenda item after applause and a brief exchange of thanks between board members and the Hand delegation.
