Committee advances autism-council bill with amendment to sunset council in 2027

During executive session, the Senate Health and Human Services committee considered House Bill 1337 and an amendment that would add a sunset date to the state Autism Council (Council on Autism Spectrum Disorders).
The amendment’s sponsor told members testimony showed the council had been "bogged down" and that reauthorization with a sunset would give fresh participants time to resuscitate activity. The change would repeal the council on Dec. 31, 2027, unless the Legislature reauthorizes it after reviewing progress.
Senator Apprentice supported the approach, saying existing projects such as the 'blue envelope' initiative have produced impactful results and that the amendment gives the council time to complete work. Supporters said the amendment balances preserving useful work while setting a deadline for renewed activity.
The committee moved the bill out to pass as amended and recorded consent to proceed. The amendment and the bill will be transmitted with the sunset language for the House to consider concurrence or other action.
