The Dysart Unified School District governing board on Feb. 23 approved a job order contract not to exceed $1.35 million with Core Construction to add portables and a modular restroom at Asante Preparatory Academy to address rapid enrollment growth in the Asante area.
District staff described current campus enrollment and capacity: approximately 959 K–5 students plus 65 preschool students for a total of about 1,024 on site, against an original building capacity near 1,200. Staff said existing portables add roughly 120 seats and that adding three additional portables would provide about six more classrooms (roughly 180 additional seats); five portables would add about 300 seats and could move campus theoretical capacity toward about 1,500 students.
The construction package described in the meeting record covers purchase, hauling, foundations, utility tie‑ins (water and sewer), restroom modules, fencing and associated site work. Staff said a portion of the portables were being sourced at reduced cost from another district and that one spare unit already exists in district inventory. The funding source identified in the record is accumulated developer donations targeted to that community.
Staff projected site preparation and delivery beginning in April with majority installation and construction occurring May–July; work will be staged to minimize disruption to students during the school year, and staff said they would place temporary fencing and control access around work zones. Core Construction (representative Whitney Dunn) and the district’s director of maintenance and facilities (Todd Blutter) were present to answer technical questions.
A motion to approve the job order contract not to exceed $1.35 million carried. Staff and board members noted the contract is above staff signing authority, which is why it was presented to the board.
Next steps: District staff will proceed with permitting, site preparation and procurement under the approved contract and will return to the board if scope or funding changes.
