Commissioners hear CASA and YCDC funding requests; probation reports growth and space needs

At the June 11 meeting commissioners heard funding requests and service updates from several county partners.
James Jensen, speaking for CASA, said the program saw a nearly 30% increase in children in the York County court system (from 67 previously to 87) and that CASA served a record 43 cases this year. "This request we're making to you is a good chunk of our budget," Jensen said, requesting $45,000 from the county to support volunteer advocates and basic operations after the conclusion of a local foundation’s support.
Lisa Hurley, representing the York County Development Corporation (YCDC), summarized recent business expansions and said YCDC seeks an increase in county support to $80,000 for the coming year (up from $73,800 in 2024 and lower than a 2023 allocation of $82,000). Hurley said YCDC’s work on site development, housing and talent initiatives has helped attract investment and create jobs and asked commissioners to consider the funding increase as an investment in the county’s tax base.
Carrie Rodriguez and Jeff Banzer of District 5 Probation reported that District 5 served 3,726 individuals in 2023 and that York County had 607 supervised individuals (554 adults and 53 juveniles). Rodriguez said the office has grown to roughly 62 staff across the district and that York County’s local office needs additional space to accommodate staffing increases and new positions.
Commissioners asked for budgets and requested that the nonprofit presenters provide copies of detailed budgets and other supporting documents to the clerk. No formal appropriation was made at the meeting; commissioners noted the county budget process and said decisions on county contributions will be considered during budget hearings.
