The Kinnelon Board of Education approved a revised district mission statement and a set of board and district goals at its Aug. 27 meeting, and Superintendent Mr mango used his report to highlight facilities needs and plans for energy and infrastructure reviews.
Mr mango told the board the district completed a range of summer projects — roof work, new surveillance cameras and mold-remediation efforts — but said the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems are old and “need to be replaced.” He said the district is awaiting air-quality results from RK Environmental and will continue air-scrubbing work at Stonybrook and at Kinnelon High School art and storage rooms.
The superintendent said the district is pursuing an ESIP (energy savings/efficiency project) audit and will meet jointly with borough council members to assess opportunities to fund upgrades and potentially offset costs through guaranteed energy savings. “If we’re committed to the ESIP and having the audit, and then wanting to refund and have bonds to pay for that, because you’ll have a cost savings to offset,” he said, sketching a path that could include a referendum if projects exceed available capital reserves.
School scheduling and student programs also featured in the report. Mr mango outlined plans for departmentalization in early grades, aligning science and math courses between PRM and KHS, a proposed Freshman Academy and an eighth-grade shadow day to ease transitions. He said the district will run a year-long transportation study to explore combining bus runs between PRM and KHS to improve efficiency and engage parents, staff and students in planning.
Board members praised administrative work over the summer. Several noted progress on mold removal and thanked custodial and buildings-and-grounds staff for their efforts; one member said the remediation should reduce illness-related disruptions to learning.
The board approved the mission statement and district goals on a committee-of-the-whole motion and recorded a roll-call vote with all listed members in favor. The superintendent closed by noting more details and committee work will follow as projects and audits move forward.
