Homewood’s pre-council on Feb. 23 agreed to put forward an intergovernmental agreement authorizing Phase One construction of sidewalks that will connect to the Highway 280 bridge at Hollywood Boulevard.
The agreement, which involves Mountain Brook, Birmingham and Jefferson County, authorizes the county to pay for, construct and maintain the majority of the sidewalks. Homewood will be responsible for maintaining one connecting block adjacent to a private house at Malaga; officials said the county will pay any project overages. Construction is expected to begin this summer, and Birmingham was set to vote on the companion action the following day.
Mayor Anders and staff praised the broad support for the project; the mayor said local and higher-level elected officials attended a press conference earlier in the day. Councilors agreed the item should be placed on the March 9 council agenda for formal approval following Birmingham’s action.
No Homewood expenditure was required for construction under the draft agreement; the city will carry out routine maintenance of the single block it will assume responsibility for.
