The Port Hueneme City Council on July 1 approved a revision to the city's outdoor flag-pole display policy to permit flying the POW/MIA flag on five designated dates tied to military observances.
City staff said the change responds to earlier council direction and the city's close relationship with the nearby military installation. The proposed dates cited were Armed Forces Day (third Saturday in May), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4), National POW/MIA Recognition Day (third Friday in September) and Veterans Day (Nov. 11). City staff said the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) helped propose the specific dates.
Jasmine Duron, advocacy and community impact coordinator with the Autism Society Ventura County, offered public comment in support, saying the flags reinforce messages of inclusivity and honor sacrifices made by service members. The council approved the resolution to amend the flag policy by unanimous vote.
Next steps: staff will implement the revised flag-pole policy and schedule the POW/MIA flag on the listed dates at City Hall.
