Student board member highlights ASB elections and district events as superintendent touts student honors

At the March 11 meeting of the South Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education, the student board member, Miss Carol, presented a reflection on the district's mission and highlighted recent student activities and events.

"Elections are always an exciting time on campus because they encourage students to share their ideas, advocate for their peers, and think about how they can positively impact student life," Miss Carol said, describing ASB Commission elections, the talent show, the Lunar New Year festival and Powerpuff spirit week. She also noted upcoming events including a band spaghetti fundraiser and the multicultural fair slated for March 19.

Superintendent Doctor Baxter opened the instructional update with a list of student accomplishments: qualifiers for the state speech and debate tournament, SkillsUSA regional winners advancing to state, virtual enterprise students headed to nationals in New York, and 27 students accepted into the Autry Museum student virtual arts exhibition. "We are very proud," he said, and he announced that South Pasadena Middle School was named a distinguished middle school.

Board members used their reports to recount school visits, PTA and booster activities, and community athletic events. One trustee reminded the public that many district activities are supported by local groups including SPEF, PTSA and boosters, and thanked volunteers and staff for their work.

The meeting also noted that many events are being streamed through the NFHS network, enabling remote viewing and student involvement in broadcasting. The board then moved on to consent and action items.
