The Harlingen City Commission adopted the proposed annual City Events Calendar after staff presentations and discussion about downtown programming, volunteer support and communications. The calendar lists recurring events such as Market Days, Downtown at Sundown (seasonal), multiple microchip clinics, movies at the park and the Harlingen Marathon among other City-sponsored activities.
Key operational items: Staff said the new events coordinator (recent hire) will serve as a cross-department bridge to coordinate promotions, scheduling and vendor logistics, and that departmental leads remain responsible for their programs. Commissioners urged better advance notice for businesses affected by events and suggested the Convention Center, EDC and Chamber of Commerce submit monthly event lists to the city events coordinator to avoid scheduling conflicts.
Downtown at Sundown and Main Street: Staff recommended the Sundown series be concentrated in summer months (March–September) to avoid repeated resource drains and heat-related concerns. Downtown managers and a newly revitalized local consortium offered to provide volunteer “sweat equity” for events to meet Texas Main Street volunteer-hour expectations.
Communications: The mayor and the new communications director described a multi-channel strategy—video podcasts, social media collateral and a central events calendar on the city website—to improve notice for residents and small businesses and reduce last-minute surprises.
Decision and next steps: Commission approved the calendar and authorized staff to make operational modifications without returning to the commission for minor scheduling adjustments. Staff will publish the internal calendar on the city website and coordinate with external partners to list events the city sponsors or co-sponsors.
