Bloomington superintendent highlights Strategic Plan, career and college pathways

Superintendent Eric Melbye opened the district's monthly message by calling the new Strategic Plan one of his "proudest accomplishments" and naming "Future Ready Instruction" as a cornerstone aimed at equipping students with skills for school, careers and life.

"Creating and bringing to life our new Strategic Plan has been one of my proudest accomplishments as superintendent," Melbye said. He described Future Ready Instruction as a district priority and said staff use assessments to determine how many students are taking advanced classes and ultimately graduating, so the district can track progress toward postsecondary readiness.

Melbye also outlined the Career and College Academy, saying it lets high school students "take tuition-free college courses while gaining hands-on skills in areas like manufacturing and automotive technology." He said counselors connect students with internships so they can explore careers and gain real-world experience with local employers.

Reflecting on his own school experience, Melbye cited AVID and the influence of peers who pursue higher education, and urged students to develop leadership and be willing to take risks to grow. "My piece of advice to BPS students is to foster their leadership potential, and I would definitely recommend that you take a risk and be uncomfortable," he said.
