Colfax County agrees to cosponsor Raton Main Street balloon rally, waives rental fee in exchange for logo and refundable deposit

Colfax County commissioners voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with Raton Main Street that makes the county a co-sponsor of the annual balloon rally at Mesa Airfield and adjusts the airfield rental arrangement.
Vice Chair Kern expressed discomfort charging the organization the routine $300 fee and suggested listing Colfax County as a cosponsor to address audit and antidonation concerns. Christine Valentini, president of Raton Main Street, said the group has historically listed the county emblem on posters and advertising and that it could add the county logo to T-shirts and other materials going forward.
Raton Main Street representatives also offered to provide a refundable damage deposit (suggested $250) if that would alleviate county concerns about property and gate security while avoiding the fee. The commission approved the MOU with the amendment to list Colfax County as a cosponsor and to pursue the deposit arrangement.
The motion passed by roll call. Staff will update the final agreement to reflect the cosponsorship and correct a typographical contract reference before execution.
