A commissioner who sponsored the agenda item said neighboring Harding County had declared a similar emergency and secured funding; the sponsor described localized outbreaks in the county’s southeast and reported livestock impacts. "I think out of 46 heifers, 46 of them sloughed their calves on it, and 23 of them have died," the commissioner said during discussion, linking the outbreak to economic loss for producers.
Commissioners approved Resolution 2026-37 and directed staff to explore grant and emergency funding avenues with NRCS and the Farm Service Agency. No immediate direct funding was approved at the meeting; the action was to declare the local emergency so producers can be referred to state and federal resources.
The resolution passed by roll call. County staff will follow up with NRCS to determine what assistance might be available to affected landowners and whether matching or application requirements apply.
