Staff presented a request from the Brandon Adult Volleyball Association to change a district policy that currently requires spectator participants and spectators to be 18 and out of school. Administrators said the policy was written after incidents involving unsupervised children; they asked whether the board wanted staff to draft language permitting supervised spectators with requirements such as minimum adult supervision ratios, security coverage or an insurance rider. The board directed staff to draft potential language for future consideration rather than change policy immediately.
Administrators also told the board that a recent DCI/FBI background-check policy audit required immediate updates. Because the audit's changes were mandatory, the board moved the updated background-check policy to adoption without a first-reading delay and approved it.
Superintendent Larson announced grant awards: a $22,000 CTE equipment grant and two Targeted School Improvement (TSI) grants awarded to Brandon Elementary and Inspiration Elementary. Larson described the TSI grants as four-year awards that provide $150,000 per year ("$150,000 times four" in the transcript) to each building to fund an additional staff position focused on literacy and attendance initiatives.
Board members said they will review the drafted spectator-policy language when staff returns with proposed verbiage and any associated operational costs or insurance requirements.
