Board approves walk‑in cooler and construction bids for second Bennington High School project

The Bennington Public Schools Board of Education on May 11 approved a set of district purchases and construction contract awards tied to ongoing work on the district’s second high school.
Assistant Superintendent Matt Ludmigam told the board the high school project is progressing and showed updated photos of decking on the academic wings and an enclosed gym face. He said the district will build an additional walk‑in cooler at Bennington High School to address capacity problems in the kitchen: “our current walk in cooler is over capacity,” Ludmigam said, explaining the existing unit (installed in 2005) cannot accommodate monthly commodity drop‑offs and weekly grocery deliveries.
The board approved the purchase recommendation for the cooler and authorized staff to move forward with installation over the summer. The purchase amount was listed in the meeting materials (see clarifying details) and staff said installation is planned before the next school year.
The board also approved two vendor awards for the second high school project: an award for wood framing materials to Structural Component Systems and an award for spray foam insulation to Nebraska Building Products. The two awards total $98,469, which staff said is below the pre‑bid allowance of $114,652; staff reported total approved bids to date on the project of $87,640,275 and said the project remains inside the guaranteed maximum price.
Both the purchase and the bid awards were moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
The board then entered an executive session later in the evening for performance evaluation and negotiations and did not anticipate action on the matters discussed.
