Ceres council appoints Ishwar Gil to Planning Commission after split vote

An initial motion to appoint Brett S. failed after roll call: Council Member Casey voted yes, one member abstained, Council Member Otero voted no, Vice Mayor Daniel A. Martinez voted yes and Mayor Javier Lopez voted yes; the motion was recorded as failing in the meeting transcript. The council then moved to appoint Ishwar Gil; that motion passed in roll call 3–2 (yes votes from Roselinda Alviera, Serena Otero and Mayor Lopez; no votes from James Casey and Vice Mayor Martinez).
Community Development Director Leo summarized the recruitment process, noting seven applicants, six interviews and that the subcommittee had differing rankings. After the successful appointment, council congratulated Ishwar Gil.
The appointment fills the vacancy created when former Planning Commission chair Serena Otero was elected to the council. The appointee will serve until the commission’s term schedule is set by the city.
