The Needham Arts & Culture Council voted unanimously on April 7 to set aside up to $300 from its reserve fund to print and install two weatherproof vinyl QR‑code decals for public murals, a small expenditure intended to link passersby to artist bios, background information and a children's spot‑the‑detail game.
The chair described the plan for QR codes tied to the murals at 1299 Highland and Chapel Street’s 'tightknit' mural and said the town communications director will host the linked content so links remain reliable. The mural artist, David Tang Olsen, is reportedly supportive and open to producing short explanation videos.
Council members discussed methods (painted QR, drilled die‑bond sign, or flush vinyl decal), sightlines, building‑owner permissions, and installation logistics. Because freestanding signs and drilled die‑bond plaques would be costly and potentially require building owner approval and permits, the council favored a small (about 5x5–6x6 inch) UV‑resistant vinyl decal flush to the wall that can be removed or replaced if necessary.
After discussion the council approved a motion to set aside up to $300 (quote included printing for two distinct QR decals and specialized installation) to be returned to reserves if unused. The chair said the decals and their placement will be reviewed as part of the mural’s design‑review application and staff will confirm visibility with the artist before installation.
