Mariemont council adopts emergency donation to support Marrymont Theater opening

The Village of Mariemont’s council voted unanimously to authorize a donation to Sindependent to support the opening and operation of the Marrymont Theater and invoked the emergency clause to expedite the payment.

Councilors conducted three readings of the resolution, moved to suspend the rules, and approved the resolution and an accompanying supplement to the annual appropriation ordinance so the funds can be disbursed in May. Members said the donation includes provisions allowing the village to review the theater’s financial records.

Why it matters: Council members stressed oversight provisions in the resolution, noting the village will have the ability to look at Sindependent’s books. Several councilors praised the theater team’s operational plan and expressed confidence the organization is working toward its fundraising target.

Council discussion focused on timing and intergovernmental coordination. One member suggested a symbolic joint event with neighboring communities to mark the gift; others noted the village’s adoption of the emergency clause means the appropriation will be available sooner than under the usual timeline. "It's got the key points that we're counting on the other two communities to come through and that we have the ability to go look at the books any time," a councilor said during the second reading.

The council approved the donation and the supplemental appropriation by roll call. Officials said the check is expected to be issued after administrative steps are completed and indicated funds would be available this month.

Next steps: Village staff will complete the appropriation and payment process and maintain access to the theater’s financial records as provided in the resolution. The village will follow normal post-payment oversight procedures to ensure compliance with resolution conditions.
