Committee hears DPW construction, veterans office and building repair updates; parking review to return to agenda

Staff provided a series of routine facilities and operations updates to the committee.

On the Department of Public Works shop project, a presenter said foundations and walls have been poured for roughly three-quarters of the office and shop space, the water line is being installed, and the state inspector was “very happy with the coordination that he's had.” The presenter said temporary diesel power is in place and a single-phase temporary line has been dropped by the utility; staff are seeking pricing to extend three-phase service to power the shop, water and sewer systems but do not yet have a firm cost estimate.

Mr. Bette asked about the veterans office upstairs; staff said work started this week and a summer employee will be assigned to assist. Staff also reported that a back church window had nearly failed but was saved and boarded up; the committee is exploring alternate purposes for that building rather than demolition.

Regarding the conflict defender building, staff reported exterior touch-ups remain (notably around an electrical panel), expanding foam was applied in the basement, a supplemental basement heater had been ordered with expected arrival mid-month, generator startup is scheduled, and an interior front door will be replaced to improve interior climate control. Staff said they hope the building will be occupiable with a certificate of occupancy by the end of May. The staff noted the generator system will also provide backup power for the elections department.

Mr. Healey reported on public parking work, saying committee chairs and department heads met to review current local parking law; a department parking survey was completed and parking proposals will be placed on a future agenda.
