After the committee approved the procurement approach, the DRA/DRRA design team presented a materials palette and visual precedents to guide schematic design.
The presentation showed nine precedent schools illustrating masonry, metal panel, precast concrete and structural timber uses. Presenters emphasized durability and maintenance tradeoffs: metal panel systems are replaceable and can mimic other materials, while modern masonry assemblies with air cavities provide improved longevity but typically cost more to build. The team cautioned that material choices affect both appearance and lifecycle maintenance costs.
Design staff said color decisions are not yet required for schematic design but that material direction helps cost estimators. They also raised security and building‑use points: glazing will be tempered and laminated where appropriate, and they discussed design cues that can reduce hiding spots and improve sight lines. Project staff noted the building program includes full‑time on‑site representation during construction regardless of procurement method.
Community engagement staff summarized outreach since the last meeting: website updates, social posts, newspaper notices (Blackstone and Millville), an updated project flyer with QR code, distribution plans at community events (Empty Bowl dinner, Pancake breakfast, farmers markets), planned senior center presentations and talks with the high‑school newspaper to reach students and families. Committee members were asked to staff outreach tables ahead of upcoming votes to answer questions.
Next steps: the DRRA/DRA teams will finalize materials direction as part of the SD package; the committee will see floor plans and building systems April 8 and cost estimates in June. Staff will continue targeted outreach as schematic materials and cost estimates firm up.
