The San Gabriel City Council on April 7 recognized three internal promotions within the San Gabriel Police Department and proclaimed April 2026 as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.
Police Chief Elizalde introduced Sergeant Gilbert Magaña, Sergeant Mike Mesropian and Lieutenant Timothy Logan, describing their training and service histories. Lieutenant Timothy Logan said, "I'm very honored to be able to serve in this capacity," and Sergeant Gilbert Magaña said the job was, "truly the best profession in the world," as family members joined the council to pin badges.
Crime-prevention officers Stacy Gutierrez and Officer Esther C presented details for the department's Silent Day Out, a sensory-friendly event scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Vincent Lugo Park. According to the presentation, the event will feature low-noise activities, police and fire vehicle displays in a calm environment, no use of sirens or loud noise, sale of Autism Awareness patches, and sign-ups for a special-alert program intended to help first responders better support individuals with special needs.
Mayor Denise Menchaca read the council's proclamation: "I, Denise Menchaca, mayor of the city of San Gabriel, on behalf of the city council do hereby proclaim April 2026 as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in the city of San Gabriel," and encouraged residents to support inclusive activities in schools, workplaces and neighborhoods.
The council and department took photographs after the ceremony. The city encouraged the public to attend Silent Day Out and said more information is available on the city's event listings.
