The Memorial Island Sanctuary Committee voted to allow American Gold Star Mothers to use Memorial Island and adjacent Riverside Park for a veterans fundraising walk scheduled for Nov. 1.
Chair moved to approve the permit after a committee member described the event’s format: a brief service and speaker at the Grand Pavilion in Riverside Park beginning around 09:00, followed by a walk that circles the island and returns to the pavilion. "We will walk in honor of our veterans to raise funds, those who are struggling with service related PTSD," the committee member said during the new-business presentation.
Why it matters: The event is intended to support veterans’ recovery programs and public outreach, including groups named by the speaker such as Dogs for Life and the Mental Health Association. Committee members noted that food vendors will be at the pavilion rather than on the island, and that organizers will circulate flyers and additional details as the date approaches.
Motion and vote: Chair moved to approve the request and a committee member seconded the motion. The committee approved the use of the island by voice vote.
The committee did not specify permit conditions or any required follow-up reports during the meeting; organizers said they will provide flyers and logistical details before Nov. 1. The committee’s next regular meeting is scheduled for April 1.
