Vice President Latoya Ireland moved the calendar change and a second was recorded. During roll call on the motion the board recorded at least one member saying, "I opposed," and one abstention; the chair declared, "Motion carries." Superintendent Dr. Schwarz had presented the calendar earlier in the evening and said the district would immediately engage human resources and union representatives to negotiate any necessary adjustments to employee work days, contracts and pay if the change takes effect.
Board members emphasized protecting staff pay. Commissioner Van Stone urged quick arrangements so employees do not lose income from days missed during snow/emergency closures and suggested reimbursing staff who used vacation or sick days during prior closures. Commissioners said negotiations with union leaders would be necessary to ensure there is no adverse impact on paraprofessionals and other hourly staff.
The board’s action was explicitly contingent on state authorization; the vote did not alter employee contracts until negotiations and final legal authority are in place.
