Veterans tell Sachem board they lack access to Memorial Day parade band

At the May 6 meeting, a commander who identified himself as representing the William Merallik Post, American Legion (Mr. Tagleion) told the board veterans groups have experienced difficulty getting the district to provide a band for the annual Memorial Day parade for the past three years. He said prior understandings that the band would rotate among local communities had not been honored and that repeated attempts to contact school principals and administrators had produced little response.
Mr. Tagleion said the parade historically split band participation between local high schools and that this year his post had been skipped; he urged the board to restore access and improve communication. An American Legion first vice commander also urged district cooperation on outreach for Boy State and asked whether assemblies or other contact opportunities could be arranged; district staff asked for contact information to follow up.
The board did not take immediate action at the meeting; administration offered to have staff follow up with the veterans by email and to pass information to appropriate school administrators.
