Norwalk School District multilingual-learner staff presented an overview of the districts bilingual and dual-language programs and described supports provided through the family center during the March 18 MLL curriculum subcommittee meeting.
Francis outlined three primary program models: English as a Second Language (ESL) services, transitional bilingual programs that phase students into English, and dual-language programs that provide instruction in two languages with an eventual 50/50 allocation. He explained the difference between one-way and two-way dual-language immersion and said Norwalk currently uses a 50/50 model in participating schools through fifth grade and in the districts middle-school program.
