Reginald Weber Jr., the mayor’s nominee to Newark’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Advisory Commission, introduced himself to the Municipal Council on May 5.
“My name is Reginald Weber Jr. … I’m the new executive director of YOPAT, Youth Outreach for Performing Arts and Technology,” Weber said, describing work in LGBTQ civil‑rights and youth programming in Newark. He told the council he recently moved to New Jersey and operates a Caribbean restaurant across the street from his residence and that he has “a long‑standing history of working in social justice and for civil rights, particularly with the LGBTQ community.”
Councilwoman Scott Roundtree moved to sponsor Weber’s appointment and a colleague seconded the motion. Council members thanked Weber for his willingness to serve and indicated the item would proceed on the agenda.
No council members raised objections during the introductory presentation. The council’s clerk noted one other nominee, Nifa Bernard, had withdrawn her name from consideration and that item was being returned to administration.
