Public-health educator pitches "Grab Healthy" retail program after Sun Valley grocery closure

Amanda Santos, a health educator with Northern Nevada Public Health, told the Sun Valley Citizens Advisory Board that the closure of Sun Valley's only grocery store (referred to in the meeting as Scalaris) has left residents with reduced access to healthy food. She described the Grab Healthy program, which partners with neighborhood retailers to increase the availability of healthier options and asked residents to complete a short survey to inform program choices.
"Community input is very essential to this process," Santos said, noting that the survey will remain open through April 24 and that she will present more detailed findings at the May CAB meeting. She left handouts that include contact information and the survey link and encouraged residents and local partners to describe shopping habits and availability gaps.
Santos framed the program as a pragmatic way to "fill some of that gap" where replacing a full grocery store is not immediately feasible. The program aims to work with small retailers to expand fresh and shelf-stable healthy items and to use resident feedback to guide which stores and products are prioritized.
No funding decisions were made at the meeting; Santos asked residents to take the survey and invited additional community partners to participate in outreach and follow-up engagement.
