District staff asked the board to consider a one-day calendar adjustment for the 2026'27 school year to reduce conflicts with community sports and increase teacher participation in professional development.
Under the proposal presented May 7, a professional-development day currently scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12 (President's Day weekend) would move to Monday, Feb. 1. Presenters said the February date had repeatedly conflicted with club sports and community events, producing higher absenteeism among attendees, and that a Monday PD might attract more teachers.
Staff characterized the change as an experiment and requested the board consider the adjustment during the business meeting. Board members discussed trade-offs, including family expectations and whether moving the date would resolve community-sport conflicts; presenters said the district does not control community sports scheduling but that a Monday PD historically draws better attendance.
No formal vote occurred; staff will bring the calendar item back in the board's business meeting for action.
