Hackensack council adopts hydrant-obstruction ordinance, approves consent agenda and introduces library elevator bond

The Hackensack City Council recorded multiple formal actions on May 5, including adoption of an ordinance clarifying obstruction of fire hydrants, passage of a multi-item consent agenda and first-reading approval of a bond ordinance for a library elevator replacement.
On a recorded roll call the council adopted Resolution 126-26, which implements Ordinance 07-2026 to amend Chapter 148 (Streets and Sidewalks) to clarify rules on fire-hydrant obstruction; Deputy Mayor Tumi, Councilwoman Clark Collins, Councilman Carol, Councilman Diaz and Mayor Gaines voted in favor. The council then introduced Ordinance 08-2026 (Resolution 127-26), a bond ordinance appropriating $630,000 and authorizing $598,500 in bonds for a replacement elevator at the Johnson Public Library; the ordinance passed first reading and is scheduled for final passage on May 26, 2026.
The consent agenda, which included resolutions authorizing bill payments, tax refunds, a tax correction for 360 Main Street, a liquor-license transfer, a 2026 budget amendment and the appointment of a risk-management consultant, was adopted on a single roll-call vote with all members recorded in favor.
These votes were taken during the public meeting after presentations and public comment; the council completed a roll-call vote record for each adopted item.
