East Hampton police detail enforcement campaigns; separate assaults and shoplifting lead to arrests

East Hampton Town Police said focused enforcement efforts in April produced several enforcement actions and arrests and warned drivers to take precautions around school zones and bus stops.
The department described two recent campaigns: a distracted-driving detail from April 9 to 11 that targeted motorists using phones while driving, and a child-safety "no empty chair" campaign from April 21 to 24 that emphasized seat-belt use, speed enforcement in school zones and stopping for school buses. According to the department, those two operations resulted in six arrests, 50 tickets and numerous warnings. The department said, "These campaigns help remind drivers to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and keep our roads safe for everyone, especially children traveling to and from school."
Separately, on May 2 East Hampton police arrested a 28-year-old on a felony second-degree assault charge after a fight at Pepperoni's Pizza allegedly ended with the defendant striking a victim in the head with a glass wine bottle; a minor was present, adding a separate misdemeanor for endangering the welfare of a child. The defendant was arraigned on May 3 and the investigation remains active.
In an unrelated incident, Southampton Town police responded to an alleged shoplifting at Williams Sonoma in Bridgehampton Commons; officers used aerial drones and the Southampton Village K-9 unit to track the suspects to Hampton Bays. Police say a 57-year-old Hampton Bays man punched an officer during the incident and was charged with second-degree assault (a felony) and two misdemeanors, including resisting arrest; a female suspect is still being sought and the investigation continues.
