RCSD proposes athletics consolidations, cites over $3M in coaching and officials costs

Proposed changes include consolidating girls basketball into four district programs instead of separate teams at every high school, combining Early College boys basketball with Wilson, converting competitive cheer into basketball sideline cheer, and making tennis co‑ed at all levels. Modified girls basketball would move to one team per school while boys modified basketball would remain at two teams per school to accommodate high participation. Officials added that all coaches will be RCSD employees rather than external contracted stipends and that non‑district event staff and officials will be paid through a centralized arbiter contract.
Board members raised concerns about coach qualifications, the fidelity of past athletics investments and whether savings would be returned to athletics or the general fund. Athletics leaders said that if participation levels at a school support a team, the district will employ the necessary staff. They also said they could provide a sport‑by‑sport tally of savings from consolidations upon request.
The board did not take a final vote on athletic‑specific budget amendments during the presentation; later in the meeting the board moved to a special meeting and approved Resolution 552 and recessed into executive session to discuss personnel and appointments.
