Lake Wales commission approves first readings of three ordinances; Miller wins seat 5 in low-turnout election

City Clerk (reading unofficial results) reported that in the Lake Wales City Commission seat 5 race Eugene Fultz received 640 votes (46.18%) while Terry Awesome Miller received 746 votes (53.82%), from a total of 1,389 ballots cast out of 9,225 registered voters (15.06% turnout). A swearing-in for Commissioner Thompson and Commissioner-elect Miller is scheduled for May 5.
On the agenda the commission conducted first readings and approved by roll-call vote the following ordinances:
- Ordinance 2026-04: Amends Chapter 23 (zoning, land use and development regulations) as it pertains to section 23-243 (exemption from payment of review fees). The commission conducted a first reading and voted in favor during a roll call; no additional public discussion was recorded during the meeting.
- Ordinance 2026-09: Amends the City of Lake Wales general employees pension plan to extend DROP participation from five years to eight years. The ordinance was read by title as a first reading and approved by roll-call.
- Ordinance 2026-10: Amends Chapter 2 (administration) of the Lake Wales code of ordinances, repealing in its entirety section 2-181 (sick leave bank); the item was read, moved and approved on first reading.
