Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts honored as National Distinguished School; nurses recognized at St. Landry meeting

At the May 7 meeting the St. Landry Parish School Board paused for presentations recognizing student and staff achievements, most prominently naming Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts (MAC) as a 2025 National Distinguished School.
Principal Natalie Anel introduced a short video and described MAC’s mission and student demographics, noting the school serves 268 students with about 54% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch and that the school has sustained an A performance rating and a strong state ranking. Mayor Julius Almore presented a city proclamation declaring May 7 'MACA Day' in recognition of the honor.
The board also read a governor-signed proclamation designating May 6 as School Nurses Day, and the board recognized several individual school nurses. Callie Sweets was introduced as a school registered nurse and honored as School Nurse of the Year by the Louisiana School Nurses Organization for her leadership in school nursing and student health services.
Board and city leaders praised staff, encouraged community support and noted the role of Title I and other programs in supporting student achievement. The recognitions were ceremonial and no formal board action was required beyond the proclamations and staff acknowledgments.
What’s next: school and city leaders will continue community outreach to celebrate MAC’s recognition and the district will publicize honorees and upcoming graduation dates listed during the superintendent’s comments.
