Staff reported the discretionary fund balance at about $2 million; the highway fund held about $2.7 million and the local road and street allocation about $865,000 as of the April report.
Commissioners expressed concern about multiple upcoming funding changes, including loss of a community corrections tax used for a corrections bond and the broader impacts of the 2025 legislative package (SP1). Discussion noted that any longer suspension of the gas tax beyond 30 days would require a legislative special session. Given the uncertainties and other pending obligations, one commissioner said it was premature to transfer a large sum now.
A motion to transfer $500,000 from the discretionary fund to highway was made and seconded in form, but the board recorded no formal second at that point and the motion failed for lack of a second. Commissioners signaled openness to revisiting transfers when the county’s five-year projections and updated revenue forecasts are available in June.
