District communications director Janelle Hurst used Monday's board meeting to highlight several recent student achievements and to remind families of upcoming dates. She noted teacher- and staff-appreciation events, a district-wide push on social media, and multiple arts-education honors.
Hurst said Cedar Falls submitted for the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards for the first time and received nominations and recognitions across production, ensemble and individual categories; the district will perform at a May 28 showcase at the Des Moines Civic Center and the performance will be live-streamed and later shown on Iowa PBS. She also reported strong results at recent large-group and solo/ensemble music festivals and named students who received "outstanding performance" recognitions.
Student board representative James Pang summarized student-driven community work: a staff-appreciation breakfast, a clothing and toiletry drive that collected roughly 300 donations for the Salvation Army, and $1,000 raised for a local family through "Do Better, Be Better." "We were really happy with that," Pang said of the staff appreciation event.
Hurst also announced that the last student day will be Wednesday, June 3, with early dismissals (elementary noon; junior high 1 p.m.; high school 12:55 p.m.) and reminded the public about commencement on May 24 and a service-recognition event May 19. She encouraged residents to follow district social channels and the district mobile app for schedules and event sign-ups.
The board took the recognitions and calendar items under advisement during the meeting; several board members thanked Hurst and the student representative for their updates.
