Council approves planned-development industrial zoning on FM 544 after debate; mayor pro tem objects

The Wylie City Council approved a zoning change (ordinance 2026-22) on May 12 to reclassify roughly 59.769 acres at 611 Sandin Boulevard and 2101/2111 W FM 544 from light industrial to Planned Development Light Industrial (case 2026-03).
City staff confirmed that five changes requested in prior council motion were incorporated into the final ordinance and exhibits. Council discussed constraints placed on the development, including a previously debated limit on data-center square footage. Mayor Pro Tem Gino Malici said he preferred a smaller allowable data-center footprint and announced he would not support the item as presented. Councilman Strang moved to approve the ordinance as presented; Councilman Williams seconded. The motion passed 6–1 with the mayor pro tem voting no.
Mayor Porter thanked the developer and staff for working through the revisions and said he appreciated the collaboration that produced the current exhibits. The ordinance includes the zoning exhibits and a penalty clause for violations.
