Town Administrator Calvin said the town has issued an invitation to bid for demolition and stabilization of three downtown parcels — 16 Main Street, 13 Cherry Street and 19 Cherry Street — and that roughly seven parties have requested bid packages. He announced a voluntary pre-bid meeting in the town hall at 2 p.m. tomorrow and set the bid deadline for 2 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026.
Calvin described site logistics and cost-saving sequencing: the contractor will secure fencing, terminate utilities, stabilize the properties and is expected to begin with the Jensen property on Cherry Street so the Main Street building can be taken down from behind, reducing the need for roadway traffic control. "We put it in the newspaper, and we've advertised it on our website and through social media," Calvin said. "We've received about 7 inquiries to get our bid specifications." Commissioner Augie Pearson asked for reassurance that excavated basements would be filled to grade; Pearson said, "I want to make sure those basements were filled." Calvin confirmed engineers' fill-and-compact standards will be required and that finished lots will be left with a crush-and-run surface rather than pavement.
Calvin said bidders will have 75 consecutive calendar days to complete the work and that the town hopes to begin demolition the week of June 22. To meet that timeline he asked whether the elected body was comfortable allowing staff, the town attorney and the engineer to review bids and make the award rather than waiting for the next scheduled meeting. Commissioners said the town has delegated similar awards in the past and indicated procedural support for moving forward so the town can start on the proposed date.
No formal vote to delegate award authority was recorded during the meeting; the consent agenda earlier in the session was approved by motion. The next steps are the pre-bid meeting, the June 1 bid opening and a short staff review period before an award is made and mobilization begins.
