Burke County health director: inspection backlog to be addressed with contractors

Danny Scalise, Burke County Health Director, briefed the Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 that environmental health inspections for food, lodging and on-site services are behind schedule because of staff shortages. He said the department has developed a plan with the county manager to bring in contracted inspectors to address the backlog.
Scalise noted that only about 1,300 individuals statewide are trained and licensed for this work, and that new staff members are currently in training. He estimated the department should be back on track by the end of the fiscal year. Commissioners asked about the department’s goals and timelines; Scalise reaffirmed the completion target and described plans to use contracted help in the interim.
The board accepted the report without objection; Commissioner Mike Stroud congratulated the Health Department on recent awards.
