District staff proposed a targeted middle-school summer recovery program to run roughly May 26 through June 26 aimed at students with significant absences (roughly 20+ days) or failures in one or two core subjects. Administrators said the goal is to provide credit-recovery and foundational remediation so students can remain with their cohort and be better prepared for the next year.
"We're asking the board for about a $6,000 investment to pay our staff to do this," an administrator said, describing the plan to hire two teachers for four hours a day over the 20-day session. Administrators said the program would be limited to an at-risk roster (they estimated possibly 10 to 20 students) and that attendance would be required for students invited; staff warned that refusal to participate could lead to retention in the failed grade.
The district explained how it would use the Edgenuity platform (credit-recovery software) to tailor lessons to each student and provide weekly supervisory support from content teachers. Administrators also explained that last year summer program expenditures came in well under budget and the district has experience running targeted experiences for credit recovery.
Board members asked about identification of eligible students, staffing and logistics; administrators said teachers have begun meeting to identify candidates and two staff members have already volunteered to run the program. The board included the item in a later packaged motion that approved items A through N.
