Presenters tell Vermillion board how IdeaFest and Finland exchange grew student projects and community partnerships

Presenters introduced the district's TransformED/IdeaFest design program and described this year's theme, "Leave Your Mark," which they said focused on student ownership and community-facing projects. They told the Vermillion School District 13-1 board that students proposed ideas ranging from murals and parking-garage concepts to skate-park designs and that several projects attracted attention from local organizations.

"We want students and teachers to become very familiar with [the design circle]," one presenter said, describing the model as similar to the scientific method used across content areas. The presenters recounted exchanges with partners in Oulu, Finland, and said visiting Finnish educators and students have continued the cultural and professional relationship, returning to Vermillion as guests and collaborators.

Board members and guests noted that the design program has strengthened ties with local entities. The presenters said USD provided support and that judges and community members voiced interest in carrying student ideas forward to the Chamber of Commerce and city officials. One presenter said judges were "so thrilled with our kids," and another noted community members were already approaching them to adopt ideas such as Tic Tac Toe memorabilia sold by the Chamber.

The presentation included photos and anecdotes from the Finland trip: visits to elementary and high schools in Oulu, participation in cultural events, a private tour of Spirit Mound and the Wilson homestead, and a visit to a folk concert. Presenters said the exchange emphasized cultural learning and boosted student engagement. They reported a positive reaction from host families and local hosts, and said the trip helped deepen ties between Vermillion educators and university partners.

Board members asked about logistics and next steps. Presenters said the district had experimented with hosting the design events on-site at schools rather than transporting groups, which eased scheduling and reduced costs. They also outlined a multi-year plan and invited suggestions for future themes.

The board thanked the presenters for the report and acknowledged the role of principals, judges and community partners in sustaining the program. The presentation concluded with a light-hearted baton handoff and the board moved on to regular agenda items.
