A representative of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1038 told the Memorial Island Committee on Jan. 26 that the chapter is dissolving and presented its final distribution: a $1,000 check intended for upkeep of the Vietnam Veterans memorial on Memorial Island.
The speaker read from a letter describing the chapter's decision and the suggested use of the funds: "Please find a check for the amount of $1,000. This contribution represents a final donation to the upkeep of the Vietnam Memorial on Memorial Island. Use this amount for any maintenance to the monument such as painting, repair, or other maintenance as needed." The speaker added the check was made out to the City of Vero Beach rather than Memorial Island and said he would give the check to the committee chair after the meeting.
The chair asked the city attorney and staff whether the city could accept a restricted check; staff confirmed the amount would be deposited to the City of Vero Beach and the committee agreed to oversee use of the funds for memorial maintenance. The donor said the chapter will complete dissolution paperwork with the state on Jan. 31.
