Councilors at the May 11 meeting highlighted recent community events, recognized local athletic achievements and urged parents to enforce scooter safety.
Councilor Simmons recounted the successful 'We Love Homewood' events and school activities, praised the Homewood Police and Fire Departments for community safety outreach and said the police visit to a school safety day was particularly valuable. "Our Homewood Police Department do a wonderful job," she said, and asked parents to remind children to wear helmets and be cautious on scooters.
Councilor Sims echoed praise for the police after an incident near St. Charles and Irving, noting prompt response and communication with residents. He reminded the public that the comprehensive-plan process is ongoing: 460 residents provided survey input and the next public meeting is May 19 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, with an open studio day May 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Board of Education. Councilor Lane and Councilor Armstead congratulated local sports teams (boys track state champions, girls soccer state runner-up) and suggested the city recognize coaches and teams with proclamations.
Councilors also raised a safety concern: several speakers urged parents to address children riding scooters at high speeds without helmets; Councilor Lane warned that a serious incident could occur if precautions are not taken. The meeting concluded with Mayor Andress adjourning and announcing the next meeting for May 18 at 6 p.m.
No formal council action on safety or comp-plan items was recorded; the remarks were informational and procedural in nature.
