Dawson County seeks Appalachian Regional Commission grant for stormwater mapping

Dawson County will request permission to apply for an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant to fund a stormwater conveyance mapping and condition‑assessment project, County Manager Joey Leverett told commissioners during the May 7 work session.
"This particular application again tonight the request is just to approve that we are allowed to apply for it," Leverett said, describing the project as a GIS‑based mapping and condition assessment of the county's stormwater system. He said ARC grants can involve roughly a 30/70 split, with ARC providing about 30% of project costs and local partners expected to supply the remaining 70%.
Leverett estimated the project's cost at approximately $450,000 and said the application is due in early June; if selected, funds would likely be available in 2027. He asked the board for permission to proceed with application work and to continue background data collection already begun with Georgia Mountain Regional Commission (GMRC) staff. "We can vote on it on May 21st because the application is due in early June," he said, while adding that staff did not require immediate board action for background work.
Commissioners agreed staff could proceed with preparatory work and bring formal approval to the upcoming voting session. The GMRC will assist with data gathering and application preparation at no cost to the county, Leverett said.
The work session did not include a final vote to submit the ARC application; staff will return to the May 21 session if the board wants a formal vote before submission.
