Adams County commissioners on July 9 approved a $1,999,789 consulting agreement with Michael Baker International to develop a countywide Comprehensive Traffic Safety Action Plan.
Public Works presenter Josh Sender said the initiative will coordinate multiple jurisdictions — including Arvada, Aurora, Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Northglenn and Westminster — to create a unified vision for roadway safety. The plan will produce jurisdiction‑specific prioritized project lists and an evaluation methodology that jurisdictions can use independently. The goal is to make participating jurisdictions eligible for federal Safe Streets for All implementation funding by 2026.
Funding for the work includes a $1.6 million federally reimbursable grant, $300,000 in partner contributions and $100,000 from Adams County for non‑reimbursable expenses. Two firms responded to the county's RFP; a selection team recommended Michael Baker based on approach, personnel, capacity and qualifications. A motion to approve the agreement passed unanimously.
The contract award includes deliverables to prioritize safety projects, ensure equitable consideration of users, and develop methodologies to track changing safety patterns and needs. Staff said they will return with typical contract documentation and are available to answer questions from jurisdictions seeking to participate.
